Every year, The Bivings Group conducts a study of the web features of America’s largest newspapers as a way to gauge how papers are dealing with the threat and opportunity presented by the rise of the Internet as a news source. Given the challenging economic climate, we were particularly excited to complete this year’s version and to see how newspapers are expanding their web programs to deal with the crisis the industry is in. Our research examined the websites of the top 100 newspapers in the United States, as determined by circulation (via the Audit Bureau of Circulations). We evaluated all of the websites on the presence of lack of various web features. You can access summary findings below:

The new Renzo Piano-designed New York Times headquarters has provoked intelligent discussion about the intersection of media and architecture. The Times' presence in the skyline of New York, as well as its delivery of a (supposed) idealized workspace for the information economy, are both useful starting points in evaluating the project. However, the newspaper's ability to address the flow of information, combined with its acceptance of reader participation, will determine its future success as a viable means of branding a flow of information.

Like most Internet users, I get a lot of news from web sites: whether newspapers, magazines or TV channels, the main purveyors of information are the leading media brands. I read the New York Times, the Washington Post, Le Monde, along with other media web sites, and subscribe to RSS feeds for dozens of others. (And that’s just for “hard” news, not for tech-related subjects.)

After several years of trying to figure out what task manager for Mac and iPhone worked best with my peculiar style of organization, I finally settled on Things from Cultured Code. The Mac application is easy to use, uncluttered, and can take advantage of many keyboard shortcuts, while the iPhone app [iTunes Link] gives me a portable version of the Things database to take on the road. While the iPhone app can do a local sync to a Mac, it still doesn't do over-the-air syncing, which I hope Cultured Code will add in a future release.

When I made Things my task manager, I needed to make sure that I could use the same database on both my desktop Mac and my MacBook Air, since the Mac version doesn't do syncing either. It turns out that one of the easiest ways to do this is to use the wonderful cloud storage application Dropbox to hold my Things database, and then point Things on both Macs to use the shared database.

I’ve noticed lately that some web designers don’t seem to be using color profiles correctly in Photoshop. If you’ve ever saved images for the web and discovered that they come out slightly lighter and more desaturated than what you saw when you worked on them, this guide is for you.

In addition to the column widths, there are only two other classes defined: ‘column’ and ‘row’. The column class has a margin of 10 pixels applied to both the left and right edges, resulting in a cumulative 20 pixel gutter. Also note the ‘overflow: hidden’ attribute applied to both column and row. The real purpose of this technique is to clear floats, circumventing the need for a ‘clear: both’ declaration. Finally, we need to set the ‘display: inline’ property on ‘.column’ to prevent the double-margin bug in IE6.

В настоящей статье предпринята попытка обзора истории русского Интернета с 1990 по 1999 год. Значимость событий, отраженных в обзоре, определялась отчасти по количеству их упоминаний в прессе (и качеству их оценки), отчасти исходя из интуитивного видения автора. Основное внимание уделено содержательной стороне русского Интернета (контент-проектам и сервисам). В целях сокращения объема публикации был избран гибридный способ подачи материала: хронологический принцип (летопись событий) совмещен с принципом энциклопедическим (после первого упоминания проекта кратко описывается его дальнейшая история).

Some cells are visible to the unaided eye
The smallest objects that the unaided human eye can see are about 0.1 mm long. That means that under the right conditions, you might be able to see an ameoba proteus, a human egg, and a paramecium without using magnification. A magnifying glass can help you to see them more clearly, but they will still look tiny.

Smaller cells are easily visible under a light microscope. It’s even possible to make out structures within the cell, such as the nucleus, mitochondria and chloroplasts. Light microscopes use a system of lenses to magnify an image. The power of a light microscope is limited by the wavelength of visible light, which is about 500 nm. The most powerful light microscopes can resolve bacteria but not viruses.
