Icons are notoriously ineffective as labels, being very difficult to interpret correctly without training or experience. For most situations, users learn correct interpretations better with text alone than with icons alone.

Contrary to appearances, the W3C specifications are for the most part not designed for computers, but for people. You may think that <h1>, è and </ul> look ugly and unintuitive, but what would you think if they were called A378, 30C9 and 38F0 respectively? Most of the formats are in fact compromises between human-readability and computer efficiency. Some are more readable than others, because we expect more people to read them, others can be more cryptic, because "only" programmers will look at the source.

The chart above is an animated SVG featured on Sprout.
This chart, and one other animation on Sprout, were initially GIFs. By using animated SVGs instead of GIFs we were able to reduce our page size from 1.6 mb to 389 kb, and reduce our page load time from 8.75 s to 412 ms. That’s a huge difference.
Below, I’ll break down the animation of one of the circles seen in the chart. The technique applies to all of the elements in the graphic. With this you can create your own lightweight animated graphic.

Anna Debenham has an excellent round-up of what makes up a front-end style guide in her post on 24 ways and her book — here are some more examples to explore.
The challenge of achieving good legibility and readability of color displays in all computer graphics (including all imagery and typography) is a constant one. Especially when computer-based displays show up in more and more unexpected places, like your eyeglasses, on t-shirts, and on vehicle windshields, not just on desktop computer screens and mobile device displays. Just because user-experience (UX) design/human-computer interface (HCI) design has added layers of complexity does not mean that fundamental color issues have gone away.
Persuasive design patterns are psychological principles that recurrently influence us toward action. Design patterns are standard reference points for the experienced user interface designer. This site is focused on persuasive design patterns for the web.
