In CSS media the difference between width and device-width can be a bit muddled, so lets expound on that a bit. device-width refers to the width of the device itself, in other words, the screen resolution of the device. Lets say your screen's resolution is 1440 x 900. This means the screen is 1440 pixels across, so it has a device-width of 1440px. Most mobile phones have a device-width of 480px or lower, including the popular iPhone 4 (with device-width: 320px), despite it technically having a 640 x 960 resolution. This is due to iPhone 4's retina display, which crams two device pixels into each CSS pixel on the screen. This is true for the Ipad 3 as well; its reported device-width is 768px just like its predecessors, even though its actual screen resolution is 1536px x 2048px. In general width is more versatile when it comes to creating responsive webpages, though device-width is useful when you wish to specifically target mobile devices (and not desktops with a small browser window for example), as rarely do desktops have screen resolutions below a certain number such as 320px x 480px.
So without further ado, here’s two years of the most common mobile web problems and what you can do about them.
This is a list of guidelines we've been compiling over the last couple years while building high-performance mobile frontends, as well as building the open source library impulse. Some of these are broadly applicable to any mobile website, some are specifically for people building apps.
The Physical Web is an approach to unleash the core superpower of the web: interaction on demand. People should be able to walk up to any smart device - a vending machine, a poster, a toy, a bus stop, a rental car - and not have to download an app first. Everything should be just a tap away.
You can remove pictures just from the device by going to the upper left and clicking on the "Photos". That should bring up a menu, where you scroll down almost to the bottom to get to "On Device". Bringing up that list is just the photos on the device (instead of all the photos that G+ knows about), and when you delete there it only affects the device storage, not the backed up version. In this article, Chris Bank of UXPin – The UX Design App discusses how mobile and web (even desktop) application design is converging, and some of the key indicators in this trend – they're covered in more detail with examples from over 50 hot websites and web apps in UXPin's free e-book, Web U via Pocket
Direct manipulation has been lauded as a good form of interface design, and some interfaces that have this property have been well received by users. In this article we seek a cognitive account of both the advantages and disadvantages of direct manipulation interfaces. We identify two underlying phenomena that give rise to the feeling of directness. One deals with the information processing distance between the user's intentions and the facilities provided by the machine. Reduction of this distance makes the interface feel direct by reducing the effort required of the user to accomplish goals. The second phenomenon concerns the relation between the input and output vocabularies of the interface language. In particular, direct manipulation requires that the system provide representations of objects that behave as if they are the objects themselves. This provides the feeling of directness of manipulation.

This isn’t meant to be mean. Hopefully it’s helpful.
Believe me, I’m not self righteous about this. I’ve made a grand total of one website that works awesome on any device: desktop, tablets, phones, and whatnot. I’ve been making websites since 1996. You do the math.
The problem isn’t any one person. The problem is that we’ve all been doing this thing called Making a Website for a long time in a particular way. And now everything is changing. Sure some developers are resistant to learning new things, but most developers are interested, excited and willing. But this isn’t a problem that you can fix by just switching out which bit of code to use. It’s bigger than that. Content strategy, design, business all have to change. The fundamental way in which people work together to plan and coordinate the creation of a website has to change. It’s not easy to go into work one day and say to a big team, “Hey, uh, we need to restructure our design process and completely change what we are doing with our mobile web strategy. Uh, why? Yeah, just because.”
We need better reasons. Real examples. Proof that what we are all doing is not working anymore. That’s what this website is about. Examples convince. Seeing trends makes us smarter. The problem isn’t insurmountable if it’s known. So let’s get to know the problem.

Your phone is resting on the table; you pick it up, and it flicks on. You didn’t press anything — it just knows. Or maybe it’s in your pocket or your purse — you pull it out, and the screen turns on. It feels magical, and it works well, thanks to a free little app called Gravity Screen. The screen knows when to turn off, too.
Проснувшись утром 13 декабря, что-то стрельнуло у меня в голове, и, взяв телефон в руки, я тапнул по микрофончику и, не ожидая ничего нового, спросил: «какая погода в Москве?»
I have always been fascinated by the overflow scrolling effects that appears when you’ve reached the end of a list on an iPhone and Android. A simple interface interaction like a bounce can magically make your app seems more responsive.
Today, I have decided to build a plugin that lets you add such effects to your website called FancyScroll.js. You can add the overflow effects to the whole page or any overflow:scroll divs on your website, customize the colors, the animation, or even the animation easing.
