7 Things Every Designer Needs to Know about Accessibility – Salesforce UX – Medium

Accessibility enables people with disabilities to perceive, understand, navigate, interact with, and contribute to the web. Imagine a world where developers know everything there is to know about accessibility. You design it and they build it… perfectly. In this world, only the design itself can cause people with disabilities to have trouble using a product.
These guidelines will cover the major things you need to know in order for your products to be “design-ready” to meet the minimum of standards in Section 508 and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0. The rest will be up to development and quality testing.

squeezr – Another take on device-aware adaptive images and server side CSS3 media queries

squeezr is most effective on sites with big images and heavy use of CSS3 media queries, which is typical for responsive or mobile web designs. However, in most cases at least some small savings can be achieved through image recompression and CSS minification. If the savings calculated by the test pilot aren't that huge, it's either because there's not much to save about your site (e.g. images are too small for downscaling and you don't use media queries), or because you just did a pretty good job already! ;)

Managing SMF software in GIT - Chandler's Zen

Yesterday, I upgraded three sites running SMF (Simple Machines Forum) software to v2.0RC5, upgrading them from v2.0RC4. Some of these sites are more than just a simple implementation of the base software. All of them have some modifications added, one (Melinda’s Backups forum) has a considerable degree of modification, and unlike WordPress, where plugins are pretty much stand alone, relying on well defined hooks in the software to get into the path, modifications in SMF tend to be intrusive. Despite all the modifications, I upgraded all the sites over just a few hours.

I believe that is because of the approach I have taken to managing the configurations in Git. In this post I want to explain how I do it.

6 Surprising Bad Practices That Hurt Dyslexic Users - UX Movement

Web accessibility doesn’t only extend to color blind users, but dyslexic users too. Dyslexia is a learning disability that impairs a person’s fluency or accuracy in being able to read, write, and spell.

Move/resize windows with undo with Hammerspoon | jverkamp.com | John-Paul Verkamp

Relatively recently, I switched my last Windows machine over to OSX. For the most part, it's been great. One bit of functionality that I've been missing though is AeroSnap. Specifically the ability to use a keyboard shortcut to move windows to the left/right half of a monitor.

Module Bundling with Webpack: Getting Started Guide | Codementor

In the wake of React—Facebook’s UI library—came Webpack, a simple but awesome module bundler. Module bundlers are just what they are called, they bundle up JavaScript modules into one file. This way, when the client makes a request to your server, it doesn’t have to make multiple requests for static files. Instead, one file is requested, which in some cases, includes your JavaScript bundle and CSS style. This helps optimize load time and makes you more in control as you can choose to include only what you need when you need it.

Bytesize — Tiny style-controlled SVG iconset

Bytesize is a passion project I started to help learn the SVG spec, particularly SVG Paths and how they are drawn within code.

Each icon is hand-coded along a 32x32 grid, and uses SVG stroke allowing for maximum style flexibility; meaning you can adjust the weight, color, size, and if you want the edges to be round or square.

While designing and coding these icons, I tried to place as few points as possible to keep the shapes simple but also to reduce on file size. All 84 icons measure in at 9KB minified (2KB in SVGZ, or Gzipped).
