Sticking with a native form control will almost always give your users a more accessible experience than trying to recreate one from scratch. Though the issue with native form controls is that they have an infamous reputation for being problematic to style.

Outside of some of the HTML5 form controls, which have browser prefixed CSS selectors for styling hooks, this reputation still holds true. In some cases (e.g. option elements) styling support has actually decreased in some browsers. Fortunately, there have been many experiments with markup and CSS over the years to (mostly) get around the limitations of many native form controls, without having to disregard them completely.

I made this for a client, took a while because their documentation is horrible, though maybe they improved it by the time you read this.

At every position of the cursor you can picture a triangle between the current mouse position and the upper and lower right corners of the dropdown menu. If the next mouse position is within that triangle, the user is probably moving their cursor into the currently displayed submenu. Amazon uses this for a nice effect. As long as the cursor stays within that blue triangle the current submenu will stay open. It doesn’t matter if the cursor hovers over “Appstore for Android” momentarily – the user is probably heading toward “Learn more about Cloud Drive.”
